Life Legacy

Garry D. Helland, age 59, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Tuesday, July 19, 2011 at Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer in Watertown with Pastor Chris Matson officiating. Music will be provided by Brad Drake as soloist and Marian Riddle as organist. Interment will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery, Watertown, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by Frank H. Adams Post 750 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and local members of the South Dakota National Guard. Visitation will be from 4:00-8:00 p.m. on Thursday at the Wight, Comes & Sogn Funeral Chapel in Watertown and on Saturday prior to services at the church.

Pallbearers will be his nephews: Troy and Chad Redlinger, Bruce Nerison, Brock Reuter, Chris, Ben and Jacob Oien.

Garry Dean Helland was born on April 28, 1952 to Harley and Betty (West) Helland in Watertown, South Dakota. He grew up in the Watertown area and attended schools in Watertown, graduating from Watertown High School in 1970. Garry then joined the United States Air Force. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Watertown.

He married Gail Kaarup on March 27, 1976 in Sioux Falls. They made their home in Watertown. Garry worked in real estate in Watertown for over 30 years.
Garry enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing and playing pinochle. He especially enjoyed spending time with his family.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Grateful for having shared his life are his wife, Gail; his children: Keely (Nick) Verstegen of Phoenix, AZ, Kyle (Angie) Helland of Green Bay, WI, Kara (Josh) Hoftiezer and Konnor Helland all of Watertown; his mother, Betty Helland of Watertown; his sisters, Sally (Ron) Reuter of Hartford, SD, Gay (Mark) Redlinger of Watertown; his brother, Terry Helland of Phoenix, AZ; and four grandchildren: Max Verstegen, Parker Hoftiezer, Abby Verstegen and Jack Helland.
