Life Legacy



Kermit M. Lien, age 87, of Watertown, formerly of Lily, SD, passed away on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at the Golden Living Center in Watertown. Memorial services will be at 10:00 a.m., on Saturday, September 4, 2010 at Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer with Pastor Tom Christenson officiating. Robbyn Givens will be the soloist accompanied by Marian Riddle. Interment will be in Our Savior's Lutheran West Cemetery, Lily, SD. Military Honors will be conducted by Engebretson-Lien Post 156 of the American Legion of Lily, SD. There will be no visitation or reviewal.

Kermit M. Lien was born on March 6, 1923 to Bertin and Clara (Peterson) Lien in Clark County, South Dakota. He was baptized at Our Saviors Lutheran Church of rural Lily, SD and confirmed at Lily Lutheran Church. Kermit attended grade school at rural Sunnyside and Spring Valley School and graduated from Lily High School in 1941. After graduation he attended Pacific Aircraft School in Minneapolis and worked for Northwest Airlines.

Kermit enlisted in the United States Marines in 1942, completing basic training in San Diego and at Navy Pier in Chicago. He was a member of the Sea School Drill Team. Kermit served in the South Pacific on Tinian, Iwo Jima and Okinawa. He was honorably discharged in 1946 at Treasure Island, CA with the rank of Sergeant. Kermit returned to South Dakota and farmed with his parents on the family homestead.

On October 19, 1948 he married Carol Jeske at Lily and moved to St. Louis, Missouri where he attended Bailey Diesel School. The couple moved to Sioux Falls where he was employed by Dan Dugan Trucking. In 1951 they moved to Berkeley, California and Kermit worked as a welder for Consolidated Western Steel, and then for International Harvester Motor Trucks in Oakland. In 1954 Kermit and Carol moved back to South Dakota near Lily to take over the Lien family homestead where he farmed and ran a dairy operation of which he was very proud. He retired from farming in 1991 and moved to Watertown.

Kermit held several church offices at Lily Lutheran Church, and was past commander of Engebretson-Lien Legion in Lily. Kermit was currently a member of Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer. He and his wife, Carol delivered Meals on Wheels for several years. Kermit was a talented handyman and could fix anything. He was also an excellent marksman, was athletic and enjoyed all sports, especially playing horseshoes and golf. He was very proud that he made a hole-in-one at the Municipal Golf Course. Kermit was an avid Minnesota Twins Fan and enjoyed playing whist, cribbage and working the daily crossword puzzles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, Craig; his daughter, Karen; his brothers, Ralph and Milton; and his sisters, Della and Bernice.

Kermit is survived by his wife, Carol; their children: Lindsey (Joan) Lien of Omaha, NE, Lori (Dean) Enstad and Wendy Lien of Watertown, SD; four grandchildren; and his siblings: Leona Fichtner of Bradley, SD, Ernest (Leona) Lien of Marshall, MI, and Doreen Christensen of Rapid City, SD.
